Post-traumatic stress disorder in Ancient Greece'

Presented as part of the Centre for Classical Studies Seminar Series

‘Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a relatively recent discovery in the field of psychiatry. With increased understanding of this condition, attempts have been made to identify cases of PTSD in the past—including in ancient Greece.

This paper will present proposed research into considering how the ancient Greeks experienced and communicated trauma and whether this equates to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as we understand it, taking into account the social, cultural and historical context of ancient Greece. By understanding the sheer difference of the Greek experience of trauma and warfare to our modern, Western experience, a clearer picture should emerge as to which, if any, elements of PTSD existed in antiquity.’

Adrienne White, a PhD candidate at the Australian National University, is studying combat trauma in the ancient Greek world. Adrienne’s talk will also serve as her Thesis Presentation Review.

After the talk, informal discussion will continue over light refreshments in the Classics Museum.
